New made-in-Malta Chevy ProStock
by Holger Camilleri, MALTA

At the beginning of this month I caught up with a friend of mine who told me that a new ProStock was being built in Malta in the town of Mqabba. Yes, a brand new "made-in-Malta" ProStock.

So I set myself the task of finding out who it could be. And that is how I happened to meet brothers Frankie & Victor Grech. The freshly started team named Cerra Racing Team, said that they spent the last three years personally building this Holdin ProStock, powered by a Chevy V8 454 Big Block. If the project is finished in time, the team’s intentions are to carry out first time testing in the next MDRA event held at Hal-Far Raceway between the 15 and 17 of April.

Once I contacted them I headed to their garage in Mqadda, a very quiet locality that made my mind relax from the bustle of my hometown Valletta.

The owner, Mr. Victor Grech, explains how the lifters where fitted.

Victor who was the mastermind in the vehicle’s building with the help of his brother, Frankie said that many components of the car, namely the complete creation of the fibre body, interior paneling and rear spoiler in aluminum where made by him. Included with this the roll-caging and chassis in steel, were also made by Victor.

Having a look at the engine, the Chevy 454 was fitted with a set of TRW high compression forged pistons, also a Competition Cam camshaft with high lobes to improve the V8’s performance, and the cylinder heads were perfectly ported and polished. The fuel is delivered through a Holley Dominator 4-barrel Carburator which fits well in the bonnet’s stylish air-intake. The high torque Big Block engine is also assisted by a NOS Fogger nitrous system, which will surely help it produce more power. The team’s ignition system choice went on the MSD Digital-6 which fits exactly the engines needs. As regards to the engines considerable power, Victor and Frankie brought over from abroad a Power Glide 2-speed transmission obviously built purposely for drag racing, a Strange rear end and a Drive Shaft by Mark Williams.

Final touches are being made, and also the engine is being build-up and mounted onto the chassis. The team wanted to have a superb spray painting job that complimented with the body’s American style, and this was a good chance for the Sufu Garage Airbrushing crew to show their skills. I must say that the flaked lacquer finish was the best choice for the Holdin ProStock.

Frankie Grech who is the owner and driver said, “we are not targeting any special elapsed times, as this will be our first run and we’ll use it to observe the engine’s performance”. This in the prospects of further fine tuning and settings which will surely improve the Chevy V8 454 engine’s performance.

The Cerra Racing Team would like to thank all their friends who gave a helping hand and obviously, to their families as well for the patience and support shown, it was much appriciated.
